The Five Solas of the Reformation

The five "solas" of the reformation summarize the great truths of the reformers. About two years ago I wrote this song for a group of fifth and sixth graders at a private Christian School to help them learn the five phrases.

Sola Scriptura
Solo Christo
Sola Fide
Sola Gratia
Soli Deo Gloria

I was very pleased with the results of the song! The kids learned the chorus very fast. The verses take a little bit more work, but in the end they seem to be easy to get.

This song is part of a larger reformation play that I hope to publish here soon.

May God bless you in your new online endeavour! As I mentioned on Tominthebox, I love the blog title—the Great Commandment, and God's counsel to the Israelites to pass his wisdom down through the generations.

I never knew there was such a thing as doctrinally rich children's songs. Or at least explicitly doctrinal: I learned Dem Dry Bones as a kid, but didn't learn the context or application until 25 years later!

Tom--

Great to see this blog happening. My 19-month old daughter may be a little young for really singing along, but, just looking at the lead sheet for this first post, I really like the melody and the chords. Sounds like a little Klezmer arrangement would be fun.

Excellent song! I look forward to teaching it to our children. Prior to this, the only good stuff we've really found for them have been the "Sing the Word" CD's from a family in Rochester, NY. I play the piano and am learning guitar, so this will be lots of fun for our family to learn new songs together.

Very good! Reminds me a bit of Judy Rogers. She also has some excellent, doctrinally sound children's music.

I just found this site today.

I'm excited to have found this song about the five solas. I teach 1st/2nd grade in a Christian and classical school and it's perfect for our study of the Reformation next week. The chords are even easier enough for me to play! Thank you!
